In 1925, with the cooperation of the War Office, British Instructional Films set out to make a dramatic, feature-length reconstruction of the five Ypres battles in which 1.7 million soldiers lost their lives. Directed by William Summers, the result is a silent classic. Unlike the famous 1916 documentary The Battle of the Somme, the Ypres footage is entirely ”faked” and the film shares some of Somme‘s propagandist approach. Regardless, the film is no less fascinating as an artistic endeavour of its time and it features some stunning images. A degree of authenticity is provided by real soldiers taking part and by the filming having taken place in the actual Ypres trenches.

Under Age

Fresh out of reform school, a bunch of delinquent girls fall in with a gang of crooks and are put to work as "hostesses" in a number of mob-controlled bars and cafes. The girls are expected to string along male customers so that the latter will squander their money on watered-down drinks and fixed poker games. When one gullible New Yorker is clipped to the tune of $18,000 worth of diamonds, the Law closes in.

Kumaran (Thilakan) is a social worker. Captain Vijay (Mohanlal) is an army captain who is on his annual leave and has come to stay with his maternal uncle. In a turn of events Vijay sees Kumaran injured from an accident and crying for help. He takes Kumaran to a hospital but could not save his life. There develops a strong bond between Kumaran and Vijay which pulls him into finding out the accident was a preplanned murder.

A winsome mutation is shunned by a homogenous tribe of siblings. The solitude ends when another genetic misfit appears, together they spawn a new generation of unique and colorful individuals. Modifications in the genetic sequence results in diversity among organisms. These changes occur at many different levels, and they can have a variety of consequences. This film depicts a homogenous world of wine glasses, we see a small vitreous tribe that unwillingly spawns a vibrant genetic misfit. They immediately shun the "Freak" in the cruelest way, leaving the oddity alone and hopeless.

Hesanut Builds a Skyscraper

A very strange-looking piece of animation from before the triumph of the Bray model of cartooning, this 1914 cartoon, to the modern eye, looks like quarter animation (in which only about a fourth of the movements are covered) and scratchboard work. Hesanut, the star of perhaps half a dozen cartoons from this period, is a top-hatted fellow who builds a skyscraper by placing the girders in place and then using a sort of brick cannon to put up the facade.
