Deep scars run through the Balkans, and a new generation now lives with these scars. Six young people from six different countries travel across the Balkans together, discovering how nationalism, ethnic tensions and prejudice have shaped people’s lives and affected their own futures.

Pelin, a young single mother from the problem neighborhood of Berlin-Wedding, is sent with her three children by different fathers of different nationalities - Robby (seven), Elvis (four) and Roxanne (ten months) - to a mother-child cure in a scenic, paradisiacal spa resort in northern Germany. The cure is intended to give Pelin, who is constantly on a collision course with the youth welfare office and family court, time to reflect and recover physically and mentally.

She asserts to have faked falling for him in order to win his trust while Angelito surfaces to claim otherwise. Josie is not really a victim but has been his lover for some time. In fact, they planned the whole thing so they could start a new life together. Who is telling the truth?

In an anonymous and bleak city, people are as numb and square as the surrounding buildings. Monotonous routines are carried out just like yesterday and the day before when all of a sudden organic, orange spheres emerge from dark corners, soaring lively towards the skies. As the spheres merge, getting bigger and bigger, the citizens finally pay attention and some curious souls accept the invitation to approach. At once, we are thrown into a baffling and beautiful world where you must lose yourself before you can find your true, passionate core.

While You Were Sleeping

The fleeting inverted image of the landscape in the raindrops as they swell from drop to drip is an optical phenomenon, but to me it’s pure magic. And then they form streams and pulse hypnotically like luminous quicksilver. (..) I shot this film with a Beaulieu wind-up 16 mm. movie camera from the ’60s and film stock that was at least ten years out of date. The film was shot on a balcony with an awning while my wife napped in the next room with one of our boys. They slept so deeply that even the thunder did not wake them. - Jeff Scher
